1 common job search tactic that doesnt work

1 common job search tactic that doesnt work1 common job search tactic that doesnt workAccording to a March 2019 study done by theNational Federation of Independent Business, 54% of business owners reported few or no qualified applicants for the positions they were trying to fill. This suggests that many people apply for jobs they arent qualified for, which gives hiring managers the idea that qualified candidates arent out there.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreStudies show that global IQ scores have risen by an average of 20 points since 1950, implying that there should be qualified candidates out there, so why are so many people still struggling to land a job? The answer lies within the job application tactics being used. One Common Job Search Tactic That Doesnt WorkOften people employ the spray and pray tactic when applying for a job. This term has become common among recruiters when describing a candidate that applies to tens or hundreds of positions in the hopes of getting a response from at least one.On average, each corporate job opening attracts 250 resumes. This means that your resume has to be outstanding in order to stand out from the crowd. When using the spray and pray tactic, resumes usually dont hold the specified requirements or keywords, causing them to get turned down immediately. When you dontcustomize your resume to each job, its clear that youre using the spray and pray tactic, and this doesnt bode well for your reputation. Why this tactic doesnt work wellOn top of the fact that your resume is among hundreds of others in the application pool when you apply online, theres another internal issue which makes it hard to secure a job.Scott Uhrig at Agile. Careers explained that,Roughly 80% of jobs are never postedprobably closer to 90% for more senior jobs. The competition for posted jobs is insanethe best jobs are almost never posted. If a job is nt posted, youre going to have a pretty hard time applying for it online. What job search tactics you should be using insteadThe Beatles had it right when they sang, I get by with a little help from my friends. Glassdoor estimates that being referred by someone at the company boosts your chance of successfully landing a jobas high as nearly 7%.Dont have any direct contacts in your industry? Useyour LinkedIn profileto leverage who you know and increase your professional network. You never know who will be able to connect you with someone who can help you develop your career. At the very least, use LinkedIn to connect with recruiters.Research also finds that staffing agency referralsincrease your chance of a successful job placement by more than 5%, and in-person referrals (such as meeting a company representative at a job fair and giving them a resume) increase it by about 4%.Why these tactics workReferrals generally produce a better hire, and statistics suggest that referrals lower th e company turnover rate.46% of referral hires stay over one year, 45% over two years and 47% over three years.Amy Segelin, president of the executive communications recruiting firm Chaloner, explains how the best (and most unexpected) hires happenOut-of-the-box hires rarely happen through LinkedIn applications. They happen when someone influential meets a really interesting person and says, Lets create a position for you. Why? Because its much easier to establish a connection and show your personality in person. While you can highlight what youll bring to the table and the skills you have, its almost impossible to show how well youll fit in with the company culture or how well youll get along with other employees through your resume alone. We live in an age where you can apply to hundreds of jobs with the click of a button, but doing so is one common job search tactic that doesnt work. This job tactic doesnt work because when you apply through an online application, youre one of hundred s of applicants, which makes it hard to give off a lasting impression. Instead, focus on leveraging your network, asking for internal referrals, and using your contacts to get your resume in front of the right person. And when in doubt, remember that the quality of your application will always serve you better than the number of applications youre submitting. This article first appeared on Write Style.Michele Lando is a certified professional resume writer, personal branding expert, and founder of Write Styles. Prepare. Here are our top five tips to make your next video interview a smash hit1. Treat a video interview as if you were thereTheres no reason to approach a video interview differently than you would an in-person interview. In fact, if you treat them the same, you may set yourself apart from other candidates who let their preparation slide because the interview is not in-person. So engage those interview skills, get a good nights sleep and make sure youre hydrated.Set aside time beforehand to prepare and afterward to debrief. Research the company, its projects and the people who will interview you. Know how youll answer tough interview questions, and what questions youll ask the interviewers. By treating a video interview like an in-person one, you will show the employer you take the job opportunity seriously.2. Dress for the interview, from head to toeI can wear sweatpants shouldnotbe your first reaction when youre asked to do a video interview.Interview attire doesnt change just because your meeting is virtual. It might be tempting to wear comfy jeans or yoga pants with your sharp blazer or blouse, but dont do it. If you need to stand up, youre toast.More importantly, dressing professionally from head to toe will help get you into the interview mindset. If youre wearing slippers, you might be tempted to think about what youre going to have for dinner or whats on Netflix. If youre wearing your office-appropriate loafers or heels, it will be easier to keep focused on what the employer is asking you.3. Test your technology ahead of timeJust because youve used Skype with your friends doesnt mean youre ready for prime time. If you havent used the video platform that will be used for the interview, download it well in advance. Make sure your camera and microphone work well.Do a trial run, if possible, at lea st 24 hours before the interview, so you have ample time to adjust if any of your equipment or software isnt working properly.4. Create and check your interview spaceVideo interviews require a professional setting, even if they take place in your home. Make sure your interview space is well lit and welcoming, that you can sit comfortably, and that you wont be interrupted by passersby, roommates, pets or family members. A private room with a closed door and no distractions is optimal.Avoid setting up your computer too close to a window, if possible. The lighting might be perfect at the start of the interview, but as the suns position changes, you could find yourself dealing with an unwanted glare. Also, before the interview starts, turn off your phones, tablets and television, and open a new browser window for the video interview. Close down Facebook, email and any other windows that might sound alerts or show on-screen notifications.5. Look at the cameraIf youre using an external cam era, angle it so youre face-to-face you dont want to be staring up or down at the interviewer. And remember to make eye contact. That means looking into the camera when youre speaking, not at the persons image on your screen.Watch the video below for even more video interview tips. I want to leave school after Year 10. Can I do that

I want to leave school after Year 10. Can I do that I want to leave school after Year 10. Can I do that?Posted December 19, 2013, by Jo Messer I dont like school and want to leave after I finish Year 10. Can I legally do that, and what are my options after I leave? Im not the academic type but I dont want to just be another high school dropout. Jack, 15, Melbourne Leaving school is a big decision and its very important that you talk to someone before you make up your mind. I suggest that you think carefully about why you want to leave school. Is it that you dont like your particular school and might do better elsewhere? In terms of legal requirements, in Victoria, you are legally required to be in education, training or employment if you are under 17 years old. Staying at school doesnt mean you have to do a traditional Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). Other options include Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Vocational Education and Training (VET) School-Bas ed Apprenticeships/Traineeships The first thing to do is talk to your school careers advisor to find out if your school offers options other than VCE. Most schools now recognise that students learn differently and have a number of learning programs available. If your school doesnt offer any other options, then I suggest you find out which schools in the area do (your careers advisor can help you with this). Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) VCAL is recognised as a senior secondary qualification and is much more focused on hands-on learning. Students who do VCAL are more likely to go on to training at TAFE, get apprenticeships/traineeships or even get a job. The good thing about VCAL qualifications is that they are recognised by TAFEs and employers. Vocational Education and Training (VET) VET subjects cover a sortiment of areas, including hospitality, dance, sport and recreation, trades and agriculture. Doing VET will count towards your ATAR and give you credit points for TAFE or university courses. If you do VET subjects you will also get a Nationally Accredited Certificate in VET. School-Based Apprenticeships/Traineeships The good news is you dont have to leave school to do an apprenticeship or traineeship, but your school will need to approve your training plan. If you choose this option you will spend some time at school, some time with your employer and some time doing training with a registered training organisation (RTO). More options If you really dont want to be in a school environment you can look at other training and education options. The Education and Training Reform Act 2006 guarantees you a placein TAFE institutions, the Centre for Adult Education (CAE), Adult Multicultural Education Services (AMES) or Learn Local organisations if you have not finished Year 12 or its equivalent. The Youth Connections Programcan help you if you have left school, or are thinking of leaving school, to continue with your education and ultimately gain a Year 12 or equivalent-level education. Its always good to talk to people your parents, the school careers coordinator, a teacher about your options before you decide to leave school completely. Its not an irreversible decision after all, you can always go back but it can be hard once you leave and its not a decision you want to take lightly.
